SPANISH

SPANISH I

Full Year
1 Credit
Grades 8-9

In this course, the student learns about customs and culture as well as the language. Proper pronunciation, oral participation, listening, reading and writing are introduced and developed throughout the year. The student will be able to carry on basic conversations in Spanish by the end of the school year. All students must have a passing final average to receive credit. One year of World Languages is a graduation requirement.

SPANISH II

Full Year
1 Credit
Grades 9-12

Prerequisite: Passing MS level I AND a passing score on the NYS approved exam OR
Passing final average in a HS level I class

During this course, there is further development in understanding and using conversational skills, tenses and sentence structures. Reading and writing skills are more extensively explored and students continue to experience the culture unique to Spanish speaking countries.

SPANISH III

Full Year
1 Credit
Grades 9-12

Prerequisite: Level II

The development of listening and speaking skills is improved through guided discussion topics. Reading skills are emphasized through the use of texts and literary sources. Advanced grammatical concepts are studied and practiced through the writing of a variety of compositions. The NYS approved examination is taken at the conclusion of level three.

COLLEGE SPANISH 201 (FLCC SPN 201)

Prerequisite: A passing grade on the New York State approved exam and teacher recommendation.

The course is an in-depth review in the target language of the grammar and vocabulary studied in levels I - III, with the addition of more complex linguistic structures. The materials and methods used incorporate the latest approaches to successful language acquisition skills. Students will use films, music, and recommended internet sites, in addition to their text, to acquire advanced language abilities. Students are expected to take part in class discussions in the Spanish language.

COLLEGE SPANISH 202 (FLCC SPN 202)

Prerequisite: Spanish 201

This course is at the third semester university level and studies current global issues related to the Spanish speaking worlds. Students are expected to work in the Spanish language as they improve their oral and written communication skills using advanced grammar, vocabulary and more complicated syntax. Students will use traditional materials as well as films, music and recommended internet sites.

COLLEGE SPANISH 203 (FLCC SPN 203)

This course is an advanced language course covering such topics as the origins of Hispanic culture, religion, the family, and customs and beliefs. These topics will be reinforced by a variety of activities designed to enhance and stimulate conversation and writing skills in Spanish. Students are expected to work in the Spanish language.

COLLEGE SPANISH 204 (FLCC 204)

This course is an advanced language course covering such topics as economic trends, revolutionary movements, education, urban life, and the Spanish-speaking cultures outside of Hispanic experience in the United States. These topics will be reinforced by a variety of activities designed to enhance and stimulate conversation and writing skills in Spanish. Students are expected to work in the Spanish language.

IB/COLLEGE SPANISH A/B SL (GEMINI)

Two Years

Grades 11-12

Prerequisite: A passing grade on the New York State exam and teacher recommendation

This two-year course is designed for the student pursuing the International Baccalaureate program. The class is conducted in the target language and students are expected to participate in this language. Students will study and discuss the culture and lives of people in all countries where the language is spoken. Emphasis is on the global community in which we all live with texts, films and other resources directly taken from these different areas. At the end of the second year of this course, students will take the IB exam for credit in the program.

FRENCH I
