Finger Lakes Technical & Career Center
Finger Lakes Technical & Career Center provides Canandaigua Academy students with the opportunity to explore careers, develop hands-on skills, and earn high school credit through career and technical education programs.
Students in grades 11 & 12 may attend FLTCC programs as part of their high school schedule. Programs combine academic learning with practical, hands-on experiences and are designed to prepare students for college, careers, apprenticeships, military service, and other postsecondary opportunities.
FLTCC offers programs in a wide range of career areas, allowing students to pursue interests beyond the traditional classroom. Depending on the program, students may develop industry-specific skills, earn certifications or credentials, participate in work-based learning, and gain experience using the tools and technology used in their chosen field.
Students attend FLTCC during the school day and remain enrolled at Canandaigua Academy. Transportation is provided by the school district.

The Animal Science program provides foundational knowledge for students interested in careers in the animal industry. Potential pathways include veterinary medicine, animal husbandry, animal training, and animal grooming.
Students receive instruction based on Cornell's Veterinary Science curriculum, including anatomy and physiology, animal restraint and handling, physical examinations, nutrition, reproduction, basic animal care and first aid, animal management and husbandry, grooming, and training

Students learn to repair, service, and operate industrial, agricultural, and over-the-road diesel equipment. Training includes equipment manufactured by Cummins, Detroit, John Deere, Mack, Case IH, and Ford.
Students study diesel fuel system theory and repair, welding, machining, diagnostics, and vehicle maintenance. When appropriate, students may have the opportunity to earn a New York State Commercial Driver's License (CDL Class B) and learn to operate heavy equipment as it applies to conservation and resource management.

Students develop skills using hand, power, and specialized auto body tools and equipment. Practical experience includes minor and major collision repair, frame and body repair, auto finishing, and the removal and replacement of parts and body panels.
Welding is an important component of the program, with students receiving an introduction to welding techniques as they apply to collision repair.

Students learn to maintain and repair cars and light trucks using state-of-the-art electronic testing equipment and tools. The classroom is designed to replicate a typical automobile dealership service department.
Coursework follows National Automotive Technician Excellence Foundation (NATEF) and Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) standards. Students receive instruction in:
- Manual and automatic transmissions and transaxles
- Brakes
- Steering and suspension
- Electronic systems
- Heating and air conditioning
- Engine repair
Students are eligible to take the NATEF/ASE Maintenance & Light Repair Certification.

Students develop foundational skills in computer software and hardware, operating systems, servers, web and game design, programming, IT security, and green technology.
As a TestOut-certified program, students can work toward TestOut PC Pro and Networking Pro credentials through a partnership between FLTCC and TestOut. Students also develop skills that can prepare them for higher-level Microsoft and CompTIA certifications.

This program teaches industry-standard skills in graphic design, layout, and reproduction of artwork for advertising and other applications.
Students receive instruction using Adobe software, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, and Flash. Both traditional hand illustration and computer-based illustration skills are developed.
Students complete a creative portfolio each year that can be used for employment searches, college applications, or further study.

Health Professions introduces students to the knowledge and competencies common to careers in healthcare. Students explore a variety of healthcare occupations through classroom discussion, field trips, and hands-on experiences before selecting a specialized area of study.
During the second year, students receive clinical training at area healthcare facilities and complete the education and clinical requirements needed to sit for the New York State Nurse Assistant Exam.

The Emergency Service Academy focuses on skills related to Fire Science, Criminal Justice, and Emergency Medical Services.
Students participate in a 10-hour clinical experience with a New York State-certified ambulance service, a hospital emergency department, or a combination of both. These experiences expose students to a variety of emergency situations and demonstrate the importance of pre-hospital care.
The program is designed to prepare junior students for Certified First Responder certification. Seniors who successfully complete the program may take the New York State EMT Level 1 practical skills examination. Students who pass the skills examination are eligible to take the New York State written certification examination.

Cosmetology prepares students with the competencies and skills needed to take the New York State Board practical and written licensing examinations.
Students learn techniques for caring for hair, nails, and skin, along with the business and management skills necessary to operate an on-site clinic serving community members.
The program includes a five-week summer clinic and provides the 1,000 hours of instruction currently required to sit for the New York State cosmetology licensing examination.

Students develop skills in menu planning, short-order cooking, fast food and specialty food preparation, food presentation, quantity purchasing, and commercial kitchen equipment operation.
Students gain daily practical experience in a fully equipped commercial-style kitchen and prepare and cater events both on and off campus. During senior year, students demonstrate their skills through the operation of a café and fast-food service on campus.
The program participates in the New York State Restaurant Association Educational Foundation ProStart Program.

Students explore the many career opportunities available in education while developing practical experience working with children.
Students create age-appropriate lesson plans and interact with young children through the center's community-based, on-site preschool. During senior year, students may participate in an off-site, work-based learning experience related to their specific area of interest.
Successful seniors may be eligible to apply for Level I New York State Teacher Assistant Certification.

Students develop foundational knowledge of the tools, methods, and materials used in the carpentry industry.
Hands-on activities include:
- House framing
- Siding and roofing
- Door and window installation
- Stair building
- Drywall installation
- Interior and exterior trim
- Cabinet and furniture making
- Print reading
- Cost estimating
- Machine operation
- Basic drawing
Students also learn shop procedures and safe operation of woodworking equipment.

The AME Academy is a two-year program focused on in-demand manufacturing skills, including precision machining, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), and welding technologies.
Students receive hands-on training using modern manufacturing technologies while following approved industry processes and engineering standards. Students learn to design, machine, weld, and fabricate industry-specific products.
Year One: Students learn CAD software and are introduced to the machine shop and welding shop.
Year Two: Students select a concentration in either Precision Machining or Welding Technologies.

Students prepare for entry-level employment in a variety of electrical trades. Training includes residential, commercial, and industrial wiring, with numerous opportunities for hands-on projects.
Students also explore current National Electrical Code requirements and renewable energy technologies. Students may have the opportunity to become a Network Cabling Specialist.
The program is certified through the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

Grade 12 | Separate Application Required During Junior Year
New Visions Medical Careers provides high school seniors with an immersive experience in medical careers through applied academics and career education. The program is currently offered in cooperation with University of Rochester Medicine at Thompson Health.
Through an interdisciplinary approach, students explore a wide range of medical careers, from direct patient care to healthcare support services. Each student receives a specific hospital assignment and rotates through various hospital departments.
Successful completion provides four units of credit, including English 101, English 103, Participation in Government, Economics, and New Vision Health Therapy Sciences.

Grade 12 | Separate Application Required During Junior Year
New Visions Health Therapy Sciences introduces students to careers and college majors related to exercise science, health, physical activity, and sport.
Topics include:
- Anatomy and the musculoskeletal system
- Fitness and flexibility
- Nutrition and weight management
- Safety and injury prevention
- Cardiorespiratory endurance
- Exercise physiology
- Medical terminology
- Applied kinesiology and human movement
- Resistance training
- Cardiorespiratory training and program development
The program uses an interdisciplinary approach and prepares students for further education in health, exercise science, physical therapy, athletic training, and related fields.
Students can earn four credits toward New York State high school graduation requirements, including English 101, English 103, Introduction to Nutrition, Physical Education, and Anatomy & Physiology.
