A Letter from Greg Kane, Music in Canandaigua

Dear Friends,

Thanks in part to the dedication, commitment and support of students, families, community and our Board of Education, the Canandaigua City School District boasts a thriving, robust and all encompassing Music Program for school aged students PK-12.

Music Education in Canandaigua is an integral component of every child's educational program starting as early as Pre-Kindergarten.  As students progress academically, opportunities in Music education and performance become more numerous and increasingly rigorous.

Participating, practicing, and studying Music at a young age has been proven to bolster student's overall academic achievement in all areas. While we know this to be true, Music education in Canandaigua is fueled more directly by the impacts that we know Music making has upon a child's social, physical, and mental well being. We believe that participation in Music at a young age supports and provides students with an unparalleled opportunity that has a positive impact for life.

All students in Grades PK-5 participate in at least one 45 minute Music class each week. The educational philosophy and direction of PK-2 General Music is based on Gordon's Music Learning Theory. Music education at this level serves as a direct vehicle to embrace and nurture Music aptitude and grow student's future potential to make Music.

Our 3-5 Music education program features a more blended approach to General Music instruction that transitions from a philosophy rooted purely in Music Learning Theory to an Orff/MLT mix. Students are exposed to singing, dancing, and Music making that increasingly uses a mix of classroom instruments as a core component of instruction. Recorder instruction begins in 3rd grade and students are assigned and provided with their own individual recorder.

Beginning in 4th grade students also have the opportunity to join Band or Orchestra and Chorus. These performance ensembles are terrifically popular at this level and instruction is delivered as part of a student's academic day. Enrollment information is readily available at the end of 3rd grade, as student’s instruction begins immediately each September. Additional extra curricular performance opportunities at the 3-5 level include Fiddle Club, Jazz Ensemble, All-County opportunities and community outreach performances.

At the Middle School level, grade level Music performance electives are offered in our three main performance areas: Band, Chorus, and Orchestra. General Music instruction also continues to be offered to students not participating in a performing ensemble through our CMS Music Lab 6-8. In addition to the curricular ensembles that are part of the instructional day, Music students in performing ensembles also have the opportunity to participate in: Fiddle Club, Jazz Ensemble, Marching Band, Girl's Chorale, Middle Men, and of course the Middle School Musical.

At the High School level, credit bearing performance electives are offered to students in a blended grade level environment as part of the instructional day: Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, New Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Treble Choir, Mixed Chorus, Symphony Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra. Additionally, there are two sets of Music electives offered during opposite school years, CA Music Lab and Music Theory I and II. Outside of the instructional day, students have the opportunity to perform with one of our extra curricular ensembles: Madrigal Choir, Jazz Choir, The Sound (Pep Band), Pit Orchestra.

When you step back and look at the entire program, the Canandaigua City School District is proud to host well over 50 public performances annually, which are all open to the community, and almost all of which are free. These concert dates are available as part of the district calendar which is located on this website. Starting in November 2019, we are beginning to explore the opportunity to live stream some performance through our districts YouTube channel.

Thank you for your interest in the Music Department. If you are interested in live news and announcements, please consider following the Music department's official Twitter feed: @CABravesMusic

Music Education

Canandaigua Music Educators empower students to fulfill their academic and creative potential as musicians. Our district’s music program is dedicated to creating an accessible and inclusive environment for all students.

Music is a universal human experience and a unique academic subject. In addition to teaching a distinct set of content and executive skills, Music Education:

  • promotes collaboration
  • builds community
  • fosters creativity
  • develops critical thinking skills
  • supports social-emotional learning

All children have the ability to create, value, and connect with music. The adult life of every student is enriched by the skills, habits, and discipline acquired through the study of music.
