Students will be prepared to take the AP exams in Micro and Macro Economics at the end of the first year of IB Economics. This course of study in IB Economics HL will emphasize concepts students need to understand in order to develop the skills necessary to become a productive citizen of the world community. An emphasis will be placed on the issue of economic development with the belief that the study of economics is part of the solution to the problems associated with world poverty. Among the challenges common to all societies is the search for acceptable levels of economic well-being. This quest remains with us, not only because of the vast gulf separating the poorest and richest inhabitants of our planet, but also because of the limits to resources, time and human effort. A study of neo-classical micro and macro economics will give the student the tools to analyze world economic problems and ultimately propose solutions to these problems. This course is recommended for those students pursuing a business major in college and/or the IB Diploma. Students may choose one or two years of study and this meets the New York State requirement for economics. Students will complete a portfolio as well as the IB Economics HL examination in May.
