Extra-Curricular Activities

An informal book discussion group that gets together twice a month, after school in the library, to talk about books and book-related stuff. Participants have the opportunity to borrow Advance Reading Copies, books that the library gets that haven't even been published yet!

This is an interscholastic academic quiz competition team sort of like team Jeopardy. We play both Varsity and Junior Varsity. Open to all grade levels. We meet from mid-October to May.
We practice every two weeks or so. The day of the week will vary. We travel to a Meet with five other schools once a month from November through April. Those dates will be announced in October.

Math League provides a venue for students from schools in the Monroe County area to participate in monthly challenging math competitions after school during October through February. A bus will leave the Academy at 2:40 and return about 6 pm.

During each competition, students participate in three of six categories. In each category, students have 10 minutes to independently solve three challenging math problems related to the given topic. Points are awarded only for correct final answers: 1 point for question 1; 2 points for question 2; and 3 points for question 3. Students are assigned to teams of ten and the individual student scores are added together to create a team score.

All students are welcome to participate in the monthly meets. The year culminates with an all-star meet at St. John Fisher College. This meet is by invitation to the top finishers of the year.

The National Honor Society is a group of students that are chosen through a combination of scholarship, service and character. They must initially have a specific GPA to be considered for selection. The group participates in a variety of community service activities as well as providing service to the school through tutoring and other services. Students are inducted at the end of their junior year and participate in leadership activities throughout their senior year.

We take photos, write stories and captions, lay out pages on the computer, etc. all to produce the Academian, Canandaigua Academy's yearbook.

Art Club is a weekly club that meets outside of the regular art class. We do many projects throughout the year and our projects do not have any due dates. Anyone is welcome including those not enrolled in an art class in school.

Our season typically goes from September through April. From September to January the team participates in fundraising activities, such as our bowling fundraiser, and competes in small competitions (Ra Cha Cha Ruckus and Xylem: Lets Solve Water) to gear up for the upcoming build season. Our main build season lasts from our kick-off date in the beginning of January until the end of February. In March and April the team annually participates in the Finger Lakes Regional hosted by RIT, competing for a spot at the National Championship in St. Louis.

Each of our team members contribute many hours of their time during our robotics season. Depending on participation level, each student commits over 150 hours of their time, including, after school, night, and weekends. Our final push of the build season usually lands on our February break. Many students will also use that time to ensure that our team and robot is competition ready.

Students will paint murals around the school that have been requested by faculty/staff or students themselves using the Mural proposal form. Selected murals will be created by small groups or individual student artists.

We love technology and provide the district support in many ways!

• Help Desk - Work at the technical help desk and learn how to repair Chromebooks and other devices while servicing broken student and staff devices.
• Digital Signage – Use your creativity to create slides and videos for all of the screens in the hallways and cafeterias throughout the district.
• Several other interesting tech projects – Whatever your tech or creative interest is we have a project you would be interested in helping with!

Drama club produces plays and seeks opportunities to perform all year.

The Academy Madrigal Choir is a select group of students singing unaccompanied SATB music of advanced difficulty in the madrigal style. The group meets on Mondays and Thursdays after school from 2:35 until 3:10, with additional evening rehearsals before major events. The group performs in school as well as in the community, and presents a Madrigal Dinner during the month of January.

The Stage Crew works on the winter Musical production and the spring Drama production. Crew members work both in the house and backstage as an integral part of the production team. Crew jobs include backstage crew, costume crew, props crew, house crew, publicity and stage managing.

“The Sound” is Canandaigua Academy’s unique and energetic Pep-Band. This group has been a staple at home football games for many years and is known for their exciting renditions of standard jazz, pop, classic rock, and funk tunes. Although their halftime shows resemble a traditional Jazz Ensemble setup, any student in the music department can participate through the use of expanded instrumentation.

This group of talented young musicians eagerly returned to school in August in preparation for the fall season. Their ability to perform at a professional level in a short period of time is a testament to the hard work that they have put forth since they first began playing in band many years ago.

The Tri-M Music Honor Society, founded in 1936, is a program of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), which focuses on creating future leaders in music education and music advocacy. Tri-M recognizes students that have shown exceptional scholarship, musicianship, and character. Tri-M provides students with leadership opportunities to make a difference in our school and community through music-based service projects. Students in grades 9-12 who are currently enrolled in one of the performing ensembles at the Academy, hold an A average in their music courses and a B average overall, and demonstrate exceptional character are invited to apply.

To present to athletes and coaches, and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes touches millions of lives. Since 1954, the FCA has been challenging coaches, and athletes on the professional, college, high school and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. FCA is the largest interdenominational, school-based, Christian sports organization in America. It focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ.

Fencing is about to explode upstate. Be part of this groundbreaking sport that teaches discipline, agility, honor and strength. This impressive activity will certainly make you stand out on college applications. Coaches from the same Rochester Fencing Club that has qualified ten Olympians and has produced two World Champions come to Canandaigua Academy four times per week in fall, winter, and spring 6-week seasons to teach beginners and returning fencers from 2:30-3:35 PM. Students in grades 9-12 train Mon & Wed; students in grades 6-8 train Tues & Thurs.

Generously funded for 2018-2019 through a Ralph C. Wilson Youth Sports Grant, the cost is only $25 per session with all equipment provided. The program includes two tournaments in Rochester in February and April with bus transportation cost only $5.

For girls in grade 9-through-12 interested in learning the game of field hockey! Weekly practices will be held in the spring. Last year we were able to bring a team to a tournament in Rochester.

We will ski/snowboard at Bristol Mountain 6 times this year.

In this club, students will learn short (24-movement) Tai Chi form, as well as be introduced to the exercise of Chi Gong and the practice of meditation. Some basic self-defense techniques out of the Tai Chi form will also be demonstrated.

The Bigs and Littles program is a program in which a high school student is matched with an elementary school student. The match meets on a weekly basis at the elementary school throughout the school year for the purpose of mentoring. The matches participate in activities such as board games, arts and crafts, computer learning games and playing outside on the playground. Periodically there are guest speakers that lead fun and interactive activities with the students. The purpose of the program is to foster positive relationships and healthy lifestyles for both the Bigs and the Littles.

The class clubs are grade level clubs representing each graduating class. All four class clubs participate in various events such as participating in Homecoming, float building, Spirit Week, and Spirit Night. Students in these clubs are responsible for planning for the Junior and Senior Proms. The clubs participate in various fundraising activities which they organize throughout the school year. Meetings are held monthly or weekly (depending upon the grade level) and club members are invited to bring ideas and suggestions for events and activities to the executive board of class officers. Every year there are elections for class officer positions as well as non-elected positions to help with the various committees within the club. Participating in the class club is a great way to get involved and allows for students and teachers to work together in order to better the school.

Canandaigua Academy's Gender Sexuality Alliance is an inclusive space for students within the LGBTQ+ community and their Allies. Together, we work on building relationships through communication and education.

Interact is Rotary International's service club for young people ages 12 to 18.

Interact is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young people. It gives young people, mainly high school students, an opportunity to participate in fun and meaningful service projects.

The Key Club is an international club dedicated to community service and works closely with the local Kiwanis Club of Wantagh. Most of our focus is on the local community, but our club does national service as well. Students volunteer for various activities throughout the year such as food drives, bell ringing, working with non-profit organizations and more! All of the clubs activities and fundraisers are student driven.

The Peer Mediation Program is designed to help students resolve conflicts. Our mediators are trained to provide a respectful, responsible way for students to come together to find a mutually satisfying solution for all parties involved in the conflict. The involvement of peers increases the trust and commitment of all participants. Students are trained in the lower grades and follow the program through the high school. Our Academy mediators also receive refresher trainings each year. All mediations take place during the school day and our program has had positive results. We look forward to another great year.

Student Government is the governing body for students in Canandaigua Academy and school spirit is its main line of work. Student Government is a Representative Democracy, meaning students vote on topics and ideas that drive the decision making process. Students who would like to voice their ideas, and are dedicated to enhancing the school's climate can do so through Student Government. Membership: All students’ grades 9-12 are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Student operated store which serves the Canandaigua Academy students and faculty with a variety of food, beverages, and other items including review books.

We enjoy all things anime together and usually watch a series or movie at each gathering.

The purpose of the Chess Club is to foster social interaction between and among students and to increase problem solving and planning skills through competitive chess playing. The chess club meets twice a month and students learn the rules of the game, compete in chess games and prepare for the annual tournament.

Come join the fun as we play the popular card game Magic: The Gathering. We will also be playing other collectible card games.

This club meets every Tuesday after school in room 233. Any student with an interest in Science Fiction is welcome. The club will watch Sci-fi films, such as the classics Star Trek and Star Wars, and contemporary films like Guardians of the Galaxy. Any member is welcome to bring snacks to share. This is a fun club and a great way to meet Sci-Fi fans!
