First Lego League Team

Team: 14970 - The LEGOINATORS

What is First Lego League?

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an international competition. Each year in August, FIRST LEGO League introduces a scientific and real-world challenge for teams to focus and research on. The robotics part of the competition involves designing and programming LEGO Mindstorms robots to complete tasks. The students work out solutions to the various problems they are given and then meet for regional tournaments to share their knowledge, compare ideas, and display their robots.

The Project

This year’s project assignment for the INTO ORBIT season is to identify a physical or social problem faced by humans during long duration space exploration within our Sun’s solar system and propose a solution.

The LEGOINATORS selected the problem of keeping physically fit in space and its link to mental health. Fitness is something that our team selected because it impacts more than just astronauts. Our country is struggling with both mental and physical health. The LEGOINATORS wanted to play their part in encouraging more people to exercising on a regular basis which can possibly impact both our physical and mental health.

With the problem identified they researched current ways astronauts exercise in space. They found out that very specialized equipment had to be used to overcome both the effects of zero gravity and the confined spaces in which astronauts have in spacecraft. They looked for a solution that would not require expensive equipment nor a large space to workout.

The Solution

The team designed a velcro board for both shoes and gloves. Velcro was used to provide resistance for a workout for an astronaut. When the two pieces of velcro together it gets stuck and engages other muscle groups to become active to remove the velcro. This simple solution incorporates resistance to activate smaller muscle groups.

Velcro was invented in 1941 by Georges de Mestral. He was a Swiss Engineer. Mestral got his idea by looking at burrs that were caught on his dog's fur. Velcro got a huge boost from NASA in the 1960’s when Apollo astronauts used it to secure pens, food packets, and equipment they didn’t want floating away.
