The 47th annual Frieda O’Hanlon District Spelling Bee was held virtually this year.
District Level Spelling Bee Results:
The Canandaigua City School District hosted the 47th annual Frieda O’Hanlon District Level Spelling Bee. To say it looked different this year was an understatement. Students used a virtual platform for the grade level spelling bee (400 word list) and the district level spelling bee (4,000 word list). These students persevered through technical challenges, new formats, and a daunting list of words.
Overall, 34 students participated in grades 3-8.
13 students participated in the district level spelling bee.
Tyler Friel, 8th grade, earned 1st place in the district contest
Stephen Chehata, 6th grade, finished in 2nd place
Hsiao-Tian Graham (6th grade) and William Sallazzo (5th grade) tied for third place in the district level spelling bee.
Tyler and Stephen will compete in the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee sponsored by the Finger Lakes Times on Saturday, March 20 at 9:30 at the Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES Conference Center in Newark. This bee will be in the traditional format. The winner advances on to the national bee (which maybe held virtually).
Canandaigua Middle School 8th-grader Tyler Friel won the Wayne-Finger Lakes Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 20, 2021!
The Spelling Bee was held in person at the Wayner-Finger Lakes BOCES Conference Center in Newark. Tyler and the other students studied a list of 4,000 words. CMS 6th-grader Stephen Chehata also competed in the Regional Spelling Bee.
Typically, the Spelling Bee winner moves onto compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC. However, due to the pandemic, the next round of the Spelling Bee will be virtual. Good luck to Tyler, and Congratulations on being the Regional Spelling Bee Champion!
