Memorial Day Parade Follow Up
Posted June 1, 2010 (Posted by Greg Kane)
Congratulations to all of our Marching Braves for putting forth an outstanding effort at yesterday's parade.  When temperatures run high, putting on a heavy band uniform can be a taxing experience.  Despite the heat, you guys kept a cool head and performed very well!
Sincere thanks to the parent volunteers who volunteered throughout.  Putting on this parade takes a team of help, and I am thankful for everything you did to make the day a positive experience for our students.

Mr. Russell was kind enough to photograph Thursday night's dress rehearsal at the VA and post some outstanding pictures in an online gallery. Click here to check these out... Till' next fall, "Parade - REST!"

Marching Band Final Rehearsal
Posted May 26, 2010 (Posted by Greg Kane)
I am very excited to announce that our last Marching Band rehearsal before the Memorial Day parade will include a marching performance through the VA grounds!  Both the director's office and VA Police department have helped coordinate this.  Rehearsal will start at 6:30 as usual, however we will be meeting a police esocrt on VA ground shortly after 7PM.  These two cars will escort students around the VA grounds, into the quad, and back to CA.  Residents of the nursing home and other long term care patients will be brought out to listen, or will have their windows opened so they can hear the music.  If all goes as planned, we will end rehearsal in time at 8PM.

Marching Band Schedule

Hochstein @ Canandaigua Brings in Guest Artists
Posted April 15, 2010 (Posted by Greg Kane)
A big thank you to Joanna Bassett and Evan Dobbins from the Hochstein School of Music for setting up today's in class performances.  Several jazz and classical artists from the Rochester area who also teach with the Hochstein at Canandaigua program came in to perform for the Symphonic Band and Jazz Band.  Symphonic band students heard some outstanding classical playing, while the Jazz Ensemble was engaged in an improvisation master class that gave everyone the opportunity to participate with a professional rhythm section in a fun environment.  Thanks to Hochstein for setting this up.

NYSSMA Solo Festival Information
Posted April 9, 2010 (Posted by Greg Kane)
NYSSMA Solo Festival is upon us!  Students should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to their scheduled audition time.  With your playing permit, check in at your audition room and then go to the small gym to warm up.  (All-State auditions can warmup in the auditorium.)  Best Wishes!

Guest Artist to visit with CA Bands
Posted April 2, 2010 (Posted by Greg Kane)
Local guest artist Dr. Alan Woy will be visiting with both of our school bands during the last week of April.  Dr. Woy is a former professor of music at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, where he taught clarinet, served as a large ensemble director, and performed regularly as a soloist.  While here in Canandaigua, he will be performing two solo works for clarinet, each with band accompaniment.  With the Symphonic Band he will be playing the Weber Concertino and with the Wind Ensemble, he will be performing Solo de Concours by Henri Rabaud.  Each of the works is about 10 minutes long, so we will not be performing them on our final concert in June.  We will however be treating our final day with Dr. Woy as a professional recording experience, enlisting the services of our audio/visual colleagues.  Once the recording is put together, students will have access to it either on CD or via this website.  More about Dr. Woy...

Great Job!
Posted April 1, 2010 (Posted by Greg Kane)
Congratulations to all of our bands for their fine performances at last night's concert.  The night featured a very diverse selection of music as both jazz bands, the Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble each shared their work with family and friends.  Students and families, full audio from the performance is available on our site.  Find a band student, they know the password...  Audio Link

Seating Auditions to Take Place via SmartMusic
Posted December 11, 2009 (Posted by Greg Kane)
Both bands will be re-seating in the coming weeks and I am excited to announce that we will be taking advantage of some of the technological resources we have available to us here in school.  Students will need to audition using the program SmartMusic.  This program is available for all students to use here in the bandroom and in several of our practice rooms too.  Students may use the program in their lesson to audition, which will basically be a one shot deal, record and save.  Or they may choose to use the program on their own and record their audition as many times as they'd like until they are happy.  Registering with SmartMusic will require students to provide an email address.  Should any student not have an email address, please contact me and I can make alternate arrangements.  More information about the program is available at their website: www.smartmusic.com

Dress Rehearsal After School on November 18th
Posted November 9, 2009 (Posted by Greg Kane)
We are planning on performing two selections on our November 19th band concert that will combine both of our school bands.  Because the groups rehearse at separate times during the school day, we have decided to hold a rehearsal after school on November 18th so we can practice performing together.  We feel that this is a better decision than asking students to miss another class during the school day.  The rehearsal will start at 2:30 on Wednesday November 18th and will be done by 3:10.  Late busses will be running that day and passes will be available.  There are also a number of students who drive to school, the opportunity to share a ride may be possible.

I am very excited to formally announce our October 14 guest jazz artists.  Last night, our B.O.E. approved our request to have the Mambo Kings give several workshops at CA and the Middle School, as well as join us on our October 14 Guest Artist Jazz Concert.  This famed Rochester ensemble performs frequently throughout the Rochester area and has also been featured with the RPO during their Summer Concert Series that was held for many years at CMAC.  They are an outstanding local talent and our students will have a great time working with them!  Stay tuned for more information, but for now, check out a clip of them in concert.
