Discipline Procedures
Bus Conduct and Discipline
Bus transportation is regarded as an extension of the regular school day. It is also a situation in which strict observance of certain rules in necessary to insure the safety of those who ride the bus. Standards of behavior and respect for others, which is expected in school, are also expected on all buses at all times.
Bus drivers will make every effort to see that children behave on the bus. When a behavior incident arises on the bus, the driver will attempt to handle the problem with the student.
Under normal circumstances correction of pupil misbehavior can be accomplished by the driver pointing out the problem to the student or assigning a specific seat on the bus. When all other means fail, and in the interest of the safety of other people on the bus, it may be necessary to suspend the privilege of bus transportation for the offending students.
These are the procedures that will be followed:
First Offense: If after verbal warnings the student's behavior is not corrected, a written referral will be made. The referral is submitted to the transportation supervisor who reviews it and then forwards it to the appropriate building assistant principal for review and/or disciplinary action.
Second Offense: Same as above, plus a letter is sent to the parents by the transportation supervisor and assistant principal.
Third Offense: The student may have bus privileges suspended for three days.
Additional Offenses: The Student may be suspended from the bus for an indefinite period of time.
All referrals accumulate over a period of 90 school days.
Parents are responsible for transporting their child to and from school when they are suspended from riding the bus. The suspension will only be counted as served on those days the child is in attendance.
Following any suspension at the Primary/Elementary school level, the student and parent are required to meet with the assistant principle, transportation supervisor and bus driver. Bus suspensions will be preceded by a review by the transportation supervisor, assistant principle, principal and a student conference, as well as parent notification by the assistant principal.
It should be stressed that the seriousness of any offence may dictate an immediate suspension of riding privileges.
